The Dead River subwatershed includes four tributaries. The most northern of the four is a relatively short unnamed creek that drains from Zion and flows eastward close to 33rd Street. The second tributary is Bull Creek, which includes a north and south branch and is the longest tributary in the watershed. Bull Creek primarily drains the Village of Beach Park, but also includes drainage from the cities of Zion and Waukegan. The third and most southern watershed tributary is Glen Flora Tributary, which drains the north part of the City of Waukegan. The fourth tributary is the Dead River, which is a state dedicated nature preserve located entirely within Illinois Beach State Park.

Flow from Bull Creek eventually winds up in the Dead River before it is periodically discharged into Lake Michigan during high flow events. Dead River subwatershed tributaries are approximately 25 stream miles in total length and drain a watershed area that is 11,971 acres or 18.7 square miles.

Approximately 31% of the Dead River subwatershed is wetland, with 27% classified as high quality wetland. Most of the wetland is located in the southern unit of Illinois Beach State Park (IBSP) along the shore of Lake Michigan. The watershed also includes one inland lake located at the northern boundary of the watershed in Illinois Beach State Park. Sand Pond is approximately 20 acres in size and was last assessed by the Lake County Lakes Management Unit in 2000. The Lake Michigan shoreline in the Dead River watershed is 10.7 miles long. The Lake County Lakes Management Unit samples the lake shoreline for swimming safety at beaches in 4 locations in the watershed: IBSP South; IBSP Resort Beach; Waukegan Municipal Beach North and Waukegan Municipal Beach South.

Dead River subwatershed’s planning boundary extends from the Kellogg Creek boundary on the north to downtown Waukegan at its most southern tip, and from Green Bay Road on the west to Lake Michigan along the east. Municipalities in the Dead River watershed include Zion, Beach Park and Waukegan.
